Domaining is a business that though still in its infancy can present great rewards to someone who can operate judiciously and with some ingenuity -- either as a reseller of names (which requires a lot of time on the computer watching auctions or a lot of luck in registering a name that just happens to become expired), or as a person who buys the names strictly for their own business to make their site more visible on the net.
I personally do both. I buy and resell domains, but I also keep many of the names for blogs and to point to my site. These processes sound complicated, but when you learn how to do it, they are ridiculously easy. Opening a door looks tough until someone show you the handle. Then it becomes easy. The same with domaining.
Though there are many ways to be fruitful in this task as mentioned earlier -- cash parking (http://www.parked.com/tour/?promo=D2676FF1B5), creating websites and selling links, etc. -- the most lucrative one is buying a domain name from someone who has either let it expire (you do that through auctions) or who needs money and is willing to sell. Then you can resell it to someone who needs it or should need it, though you may have to convince them of the latter. Most of the public is still a bit behind the times when it comes to the internet. And the ones that are a little bit more adventurous in terms of business are reaping the rewards. Just like everything else. Those that stick their necks out don't always get them chopped off as naysayers are prone to pronounce.
Right now due to the current economic situation a lot of great domains that have been off the market for some time are coming back on which presents a wonderful opportunity for businesses that are savvy enough to be on the net, or are going on the net. The time is not too far down the road when NOT being on the net will be the kiss of death for a business that needs an outreach beyond the most immediate local community. And as we get more savvy technologically we even have a little bit of a negative opinion of businesses that are not on the internet with at least even a simple web page because we are now far enough along in this game to expect such. Even the various yellow pages type directories are getting into the internet directory game because they know fewer and fewer people are reaching for printed directories, but instead starting their searches on the internet. That is particularly true for some businesses such as real estate.
Don't forget that when the phone was first invented people didn't rush out to get one. But a decade later, a business without a phone was handicapped. The same is now rapidly becoming true for businesses being lazy about advancing to the internet, and once they are forced to realize it , the best names will be gone. Or domain traders will be charging much higher prices than they are now.
Keep in mind though that buying a domain name does not mean spending thousands of dollars. Depending on the name a resell name can be purchased for $39.00 to $900. But even the higher priced name is well worth it because it could well bring in the business.
And when you have a domain or domains you will find that it is very easy to develop a web page either with software, with a person who can develop one for you (these days this can be achieve for only a few hundred dollars, sometimes even under a hundred with templates, not like the thousands of the past).
